For health policy that works, look at the evidence By Linda Gorman, opinion contributor When a policy generating a lot of fame and fortune starts to go wrong, the temptation to ignore new data can be irresistible. For over 50 years, mainstream U.S. health policy makers have promoted research supporting Kenneth Arrow’s 1963 assertion that […]

American Academy of Actuaries An address by George Ross Fisher, MD, to the Actuarial Society of New York, was featured in one of our annual medical conferences. His opening statement was that employers should move out of the health insurance business completely, as gracefully and as quickly as they can. His reasoning was medical, […]

Warmest personal regards, Del Meyer, MD, Editor and Founder. * * * * * The major current Problems in HealthCare The $3 trillion health care industry is the only major segment of the economy that is failing, and there is nothing the employer, insurance carrier or government can do about it. Health care is the only product or service (outside of public education) that has consistently grown worse over the past 75 years, with decreasing customer (patient) satisfaction. Every other product and service in our economy has improved in quality and grown less expensive over time, with increasing customer satisfaction. Health care is the only sector of the economy where prices have been steadily increasing since the end of WWII. Every other sector of the economy is reaping the benefits of Moore’s Law, which states that the cost of digital technology decreases by 50 percent every 18 months. In health care, it is the reverse: less efficient and more-costly. For instance, although the Length of Stay (LOS) for delivery of a child has decreased from four or five days to one or two days, the hospital cost has more than doubled. The LOS for gallbladder surgery has decreased from five days to one day, but the hospital cost has doubled. The surgeons’ fees have remained relatively stable during this time. The answer and solution to this conundrum is the challenge of HealthPlanUSA. Please join us in this dialog and conversation.

On this eve of Christmas, we pause to reflect on why people of every religious and ethnic group want to enjoy the freedoms of our country. Perhaps the radical son, David Horowitz said it well when he stated in a medical conference that at no time in history have his Jewish people enjoyed such freedom […]

We are not catholic but have recently seen the www.CatholicVote.org newsletter with its political orientation. Raised in a town where two thirds were catholic and essentially all were liberal democrats, it is a marked changed to see the catholic newsletters be pro-conservative and Republican. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America at their recent convention has […]

Writing in National Affairs (“Rethinking Polarization”), Rauch, a Brookings Institution senior fellow, postulates a vast emptiness at the core of the politics that has engulfed us: “What if, to some significant extent, the increase in partisanship is not really about anything?” What if rival tribalisms are largely untethered from ideologies? This is plausible. The angriest […]
