I started my practice in 1970 at American River Hospital which I subsequently became aware as the Abortion Mill for Sacramento. Abortion was covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and most insurance companies. I knew the obstetricians and felt comfortable with them as I had lunch in the Staff Lounge. The practice of Abortion was never discussed in the Doctors’ lounge. A couple of years later when Roe v. Wade happened, there was no change in the practice at my Hospital. What happened was that abortion was practiced in a few more hospitals in states that allowed abortions. The practice of medicine occurred with the knowledge, supervision and ethics of the medical staff. After Roe v Wade it was open sesame. Abortion was no longer controlled by the Medical Ethics of the Medical Staff or controlled by the state. Now the killing of the preborn could occur everywhere and neither the medical staff nor the states could control it. After Roe v. Wade doctors could no longer discuss their personal medical ethics because prenatal killing was now legal with the supreme court’s endorsement of unlimited abortion at any stage of prenatal life..
